In a team

You're a steady anchor in the team: you work calmly and consistently, and what you take on, you get done. You're kind to others and don't get thrown by tense moments, so people like turning to you. Just make sure you share your own opinions and needs too, instead of only fitting in.

Studying and exam season

You study best regularly, on a predictable schedule, and repetition doesn't bother you. That's a big plus in exam season: if you start in time, you can work through the material at a steady pace. If an unfamiliar type of task turns up, don't let it throw you: ask for a worked example and start from there.

Under stress

Lots of things changing at once, or not being clear on what's expected of you, can knock you off balance. It helps to ask what the new expectation is, and to build a new routine step by step. If you feel you're carrying more than your fair share, say so: being kind doesn't mean you have to carry everything.

Growth tips

  • At least once a year, try something completely new: a new task, a new team or a new place.
  • Practise standing up for your own interests, for example when shifts or tasks are being divided up.
  • When change comes, ask what's behind it: once you understand it, it's easier to get on board.

For your first student job

  • If you can, look for longer-term work in one place, like a shop, a checkout or office work.
  • In your first week, ask what's expected and what a good day looks like: it'll turn into routine quickly.
  • If your reliability keeps earning you more tasks, feel free to ask what options you have to move up.
