In a team

When everyone on the team is scrambling, you stay calm and quickly work out the next step. That gives others a lot of security, especially at peak times. Just remember that not everyone processes tough moments as fast as you do: sometimes a simple 'you OK?' is worth more than a ready-made solution.

Studying and exam season

You learn best by doing: tasks, examples, and trying things out to see whether they work. In exam season your calm is an advantage, but don't leave studying to the last day just because you're not nervous. Do a timed mock exam to find out where the gaps still are.

Under stress

You find it hard when there's nothing you can do, when decisions are slow, or when there's lots of talk about something you think should have been fixed long ago. It helps to focus on your own concrete part, and to treat patience as practice. Looking calm on the outside doesn't mean your reserves are endless: when it's been a lot, rest too.

Growth tips

  • Before you jump in with a solution, ask how the other person is doing.
  • Now and then, say how you feel about a situation, not just what you're doing about it.
  • After a mistake, take a minute to see what you can learn from it before moving on.

For your first student job

  • If you can, look for busy places where quick, practical decisions matter, like peak-time hospitality or a warehouse's busy season.
  • In your first weeks, learn the rules even if you think there's a faster way: understand the system first, improve it later.
  • When handling a complaint, hear the person out fully before you offer the solution.
