Student jobs where this helps
Only ideas: you can apply for any job — your type is not a suitability criterion. Some jobs require you to be 18+.
Typical profile
In a team
You can tell when someone is stuck or having a bad day, and you're often the one who smooths out tension. Around you, people dare to ask questions and make mistakes, which is good for the whole team. Just don't stay quiet for the sake of peace when something really isn't working: kind but honest feedback helps the team too.
Studying and exam season
You like learning together with others, helping each other out, and you're good at explaining what you already understand. In exam season, make sure helping others doesn't eat into your own study time: decide in advance when you'll help and when you'll study alone. Quizzing each other with a study buddy is a quick and effective way to review.
Under stress
Tension in the team, someone being upset with you, or having said yes to too many requests can weigh on you. It helps to say how much you can take on, and to let yourself off the hook from always pleasing everyone. You can ask for help too: just as you're happy to help, others are happy to help you.
Growth tips
- Practise a kind no: 'I can't fit it in right now, but I'd be happy to next week.'
- Keep feedback short and specific: what the problem was, and what you suggest instead.
- Once a week, check what you need, not just what everyone else needs.
For your first student job
- If you can, look for work with people, like customer service, reception or kids' activities.
- Clarify your tasks early on, so you don't quietly end up doing other people's work as well.
- If a customer is unpleasant, don't take it personally: asking your manager for help isn't a failure.
