Credit index calculator

Weighted average, credit index and corrected credit index with the official Hungarian formulas — plus a quick check of whether you keep your state-funded place.

Made for the Hungarian higher-education system: grades on the 1–5 scale and the formulas of Government Decree 87/2015. It is not a GPA (4.0 scale) calculator.

Your courses this semester

Enter the credits and the grade of each course you registered for. A failed or ungraded course counts towards your registered credits, but not towards your completed credits.

Weighted average

–

Σ(credits × grade) / completed credits

Credit index

–

Σ(credits × grade) / 30

Corrected credit index

–

credit index × completed / registered

Registered: 0 credits · completed: 0 credits · Σ(credits × grade) = 0.

Will you keep your state-funded place?

At the end of the academic year your university looks at your credits and your weighted average averaged over your last two active semesters (Nftv. Section 48(2)). Enter the figures of your previous active semester from Neptun (or your university's study system). Take the thresholds from your university's organisational and operational rules (SZMSZ) — they are often in the Study and Examination Regulations (TVSZ).

Recognised (transferred) credits also count as earned credits (Government Decree 87/2015, Section 61(9)).

Set by your university’s SZMSZ at least 15 days before the academic year (Nftv. Section 48(2)). Before 2022 the central rule was 18 credits per semester, and many universities still require this amount.

This is also set by your university’s SZMSZ. Before 2022 the central rule was 2.25–3.0 depending on the field of study, and many universities still require something similar.

Fill in your courses above and the two figures of your previous semester, and the check will appear here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the weighted average, the credit index and the corrected credit index?
The weighted average (súlyozott tanulmányi átlag) is the credit-weighted mean of the grades of your completed courses (quality). The credit index (kreditindex) divides the same sum by 30, so it also measures quantity: 30 credits with grade 5 = 5.00. The corrected credit index (korrigált kreditindex) multiplies this by the ratio of completed to registered credits, so failed courses pull it down too. (Government Decree 87/2015, Section 57)
Is this the same as a GPA?
No. Hungarian universities grade on a 1–5 scale (5 = excellent, 2 = pass, 1 = fail) and use the three indicators defined by Hungarian law. A US-style GPA on a 4.0 scale is calculated differently — if you need one for an application abroad, ask your university’s international office for the official conversion.
What is the scholarship index?
A university-specific indicator (ösztöndíjindex) used to rank students for the academic scholarship — in most places it is the corrected credit index or the weighted average (sometimes with faculty multipliers). The exact formula is in your university’s regulations on fees and benefits (térítési és juttatási szabályzat); the calculator gives you all three base values.
When is a student moved to a self-financed place?
At the end of the academic year (by 31 July, once per academic year), if, averaged over your last two active semesters, you did not earn the required credits OR did not reach the required weighted average. Failing either condition is enough. The thresholds are set by your university’s organisational and operational rules (SZMSZ, often in the Study and Examination Regulations, TVSZ) at least 15 days before the academic year (Nftv. Section 48(2)). Before 2022 the central rule was 18 credits per semester and an average of 2.25–3.0 depending on the field of study, and many universities still require something similar — that is why you enter your own thresholds in the calculator. If you have studied at your university for no more than one semester so far, you are not considered in the reclassification decision. Suspended semesters and semesters of a part-time study period abroad do not count as one of the two semesters, while recognised (transferred) credits count as earned credits.
I am an international student — does the reclassification check apply to me?
Only if you study on a Hungarian state-funded (scholarship) place. If you pay tuition (self-financed) or study on a separate scholarship programme such as Stipendium Hungaricum, the conditions for keeping your place or scholarship are set by that programme and your university, so check them there. The three averages themselves are calculated in the same way.
Do failed courses count?
Not in the weighted average (only courses with at least a pass grade count), but they do count in the corrected credit index, because they are part of your registered credits. A course you did not take the exam for behaves the same way.
Do you store my data?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to our server.
